Week 2: Virtual Wedding Planning and Social Media

For my IST class at Syracuse University, I have been challenged to come up with an entrepreurial idea and relate it to the world of computers.  Because I don't want to waste a semester doing a project on something I don't care about, I have choosen virtual wedding planning as my topic of interest.

The idea of virtual wedding planning seems like it could become a very successful industry in our faced-paced world.  With most couples these days consiting of two working people, it is becoming harder and harder to find the time to plan a wedding.  My idea would consist of a main webpage listing profiles of certified wedding and event planners.  Couples would have to register to enter the site, creating a profile about themselves and their big day.  Then couples would be matched with wedding planners, in an on-line dating fashion.  Then, the majority of the wedding planning (with the exception of dress and tux fittings) would happen via email, skype, and instant messenger.  Planners would keep in contact with their couples, but all the choices would be made through videos created by the planner (ie. a video of all the reception venues, a video for flowers, etc.)  This allows brides to do their planning whenever they are free, not having to base it on the hours of stores and never having to leave their homes.  All of the contract signing and grunt work would be done by the planner.

This week, in lecture we talked about the important role social media plays these days.  Social media would have a huge impact on my idea of virtual wedding planning.  Not only is social media a key way for planners to keep in touch with their brides, but is would be a great way to promote the new addition to the industry.  By creating facebook pages, twitter acounts, etc. for our company, we would get a lot more traffic to our site and therefor the possibility of a lot more customers.  Also, we could use social media to find vendors in different regions of the country that we could use for the events we are planning.

I think that this is a really stellar idea because it would allow people to have the experience of having a personal wedding planner without necessarily having to pay the same high cost for the service. I love the idea that all of this can be done online and that it is not dependent on face to face communication because I feel that makes the entire process less time consuming and would be less of a burden on the couple. Again, great idea!
